PostSubject: How to not get hacked   Sun Aug 01, 2010 3:59 pm

Here's a guide witch i didn't wrote but i thought seems like a good thing to keep in mind.

Credits goes to IsrafelDarklight from SLR Forums study

In Game
1. Don't have an easy to guess password, use Numbers and letters
2. Change your recovery questions OFTEN (Once every 2-3 months)
3. It is inadvisable to cancel Recovery questions, so keep them on
4. Don't piss off people in game, some are hackers and they can get you
5. have a secure PIN number

Out of Game
1. Don't download ANYTHING you don't understand or know.
2. Scan your computer often for Viruses and Spyware.
3. Porn sites are a no no, and are usually laced with Spyware
4. Only go to websites you trust.

Here are some of the commen SCAMS people use, not hacks.

SCAM: "Armor trimming!"
Definition: People claiming they can make trimmed Armor
Explination:First off, have you ever seen a skill that says Armor Trimming? Didn't think so. Trimmed armor is cool and all, but its not a Makable object. Its obtained from Treasure Trails, and bought from other players.
Prevention: NEVER give armor away if they promise Trimmed.

SCAM:"Cutting Gems Free!"
Definition: People will take your gems, saying they will cut them, then usually log out
Explination: Most people will just take them, but there are some people (Like myself) Who do actually cut Gems for free, they are rare, but out there.
Prevention: Don't give away uncut Gems, ask for Cut gems as collateral, or something of equal value for cutters.

SCAM: "Wana team in wildy?"
Definition: People will take you out to the wilderness under the false pretence of PKing other players. They then procead to kill you and take your items.
Explination: People don't like working for high level items, so they bring people out into the wilderness and kill them, taking all the items they drop along the way
Prevention: Don't go into the wilderness with people you don't know.

SCAM: "Hey, want me to Dupe your items?"
Definition: People will tell you to Drop items, then press ALT-F4, or CTRL-Q to exit the game, then they take the items you dropped
Explination: This is usually done in Lumbridge Castle, people will hang off to the side, and wait for somone to come by, they tell them about the dupe, and the person logs off! Its a horrable crime, and a low way to get items.
Prevention: You CANNOT duplicate any items at ALL without actually buying them. Duplicating items means hacking into the Mainframe, changing your Data, and getting items like that. Don't fall for these lies.

1. Scan your computer often (Once every 4 days in my oppinion)
2. Have a hard to guess password
3. Use numbers in your password
4. change your password every so often
5. Only visit trusted websites
6. Don't use your Runescape Password for anything but Runescape
7. Don't piss people off in game.
8. Avoid flashing expensive items in public
9. Take Expensive items to the Grand Exchange if you are going to trade them.
10. USE COMMEN SENCE.

I hate seeing people getting scammed and hacked, but taking these few steps can help prevent that from happening all together so be careful but dont forget to have fun! cheers

Didn't the trade limit prevent these scams? at least i haven't seen them since then.
Always good to be reminded about security Wink

Not all of them, sadly people still get scammed but not as much as before when they pretty much got their living money from it...scratch

Wilderness and account hacking is probably the most common things today.
